What Is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient healing art based on the principal that the body will, given the opportunity, heal itself and bring about a state of natural balance in order to function to its full capacity. Reflexology is based on the principal that there are certain reflex points on the body corresponding to all parts of the body, and by working on these points, balance can be restored to the body. Applying pressure to the foot using the hands helps to stimulate energy flow in the body, and so reenergize and revitalise the client.
Reflexology is a holistic therapy and works on the whole person, to include body, mind and spirit, and not just a specific symptom. It is becoming more accepted and recognised that stress, lifestyle and poor diet among other factors can contribute to the onset of diseases and disorders within the body. With up to 80% of diseases being stress-related it is vital that people take responsibility for their own health and learn to look after their own well-being. Reflexology works very well as a preventative health-care, helping to keep the body balanced, and so help prevent diseases and disorders from occurring.
A reflexology treatment helps the client to relax deeply and by doing so helps to create a space where the body can balance and heal itself. The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China as far back at 3,000 BC. Dr. William Fitzgerald is accredited with introducing reflexology to Western society in 1913 as 'Zone Therapy'. In the 1930's Eunice Ingham further developed zone therapy into what it is now known as reflexology. She wrote many books, among these are 'stories the Feet Can Tell' and 'Stories the feet have told'
